I am a single parent of an 11 year old boy. I have a
BSBA Hotel/Restaurant Mgmt. with a minor in Business from Denver
University. Having worked for many years in Hotel & Rest.
Management, I moved into outside sales in order to have a more
flexible schedule to care for my son. That was one of the wisest
things I ever did because of what lay ahead for us. Sean was always
a high-maintenance, curious and clingy child. By age 4, school
suggested he be tested for ADHD. The only ADHD medicine that worked
for him was the short acting one, the others causes such mood swings
and aggression in him. At that time, his pediatrician and a child
psychologist suggested that he may have a “mood disorder”. By age 8,
my son had his first full-blown mania episode and didn’t sleep for 4
days straight and he had to be hospitalized for several weeks to get
him under control. This became a pattern for us for the next couple
of years where he would become unstable, suicidal and not safe to
himself. After three separate hospitalizations, I finally chose a
more aggressive option of putting him in a Children’s Residential
Treatment Program which lasted for 9 months. There he got 24/7 care
and they were finally able to get him stabilized with the proper
medication regime.
It has been a very long journey for us, but I have
learned and grown from this. I felt lost years ago, I had no idea
where to find support and I felt so isolated. It is great to find a
group of parents with similar situations to share, educate, and
advocate together. A strong support is so important to managing
yourself and your child. Collectively as a group, I hope we can
reduce the stigma and ignorance of BP and all other Affective
Disorders and just let our kids be defined by who they are, not by
what illness they have.
