How many children in SC are affected by mental illness?

What happens when children are not identified and treated?

The exact number of children with a mental illness in South Carolina is not known because many children have not been identified and/or treated. However, we do have some general numbers based on the 2005 SC Kids.  The sample is based on children between the ages of 9-17 yrs. old

 

Based on the 2005 SC Kids Count, Children between the ages of 9-17 yrs old:

 

Children affected are….

20%(104,070) meet diagnostic criteria for  mental disorders

bullet

12% (62,442) have substantial functional impairment      

bullet

8% (41,628) have extreme functional  impairment                                                                       

 

Children served by SC Department of Mental Health are…

17,500 between ages 9-17 yrs. old. (32,918- 0-17 year olds)

bullet

14,053 were served in school based mental health programs

 

According to the SC Department of Education, Office of Exceptional Children….

101,731 school students identified with disabilities:

5,786 are identified emotionally disabled

bullet

6,817 Other health impaired (this includes: Attention Deficit Disorder, Depression and Bipolar)

47,876 Learning Disabled, many with co-existing mental health needs

 

According to studies by the SC Department of Juvenile Justice….

72% in a random sample of SCDJJ met full criteria for at least one mental health disorder

20% met criteria for a severe disorder

bullet

50% have substance abuse problems

 

According to the SC Department of Social Services …

2100 children and adolescents per year in DSS custody qualify for Managed Treatment Services (MTS) under the Interagency System of Caring for Emotionally Disturbed Children (ISCEDC)
