BDD is classified as a somatization disorder under DSM-IV
criteria. However, clinically it appears to have similarities to OCD. BDD is
characterized by a preoccupation with an imagined physical defect or vastly
exaggerated concern for a minor defect. Individuals with BDD tend to focus on
their defect for at least an hour per day, but often it is much more. The most
common treatment for BDD is SSRI medications and cognitive-behavioral
psychotherapy.
